How do we get to be more Insightful?
Insight
How do we get to be more insightful and what exactly would that mean for you?
We would all like to think that we can behave with integrity and with a wisdom that would be useful to others and reflect well on ourselves. It is this striving towards greater things that sets us aside from our animal friends.
Insights can give us a valuable range of complex information which can be used to move forward in almost any process we care to engage in. However, information alone does not give insight – viewing that information in an holistic manner creates a multi-dimensional picture but it is still only information. It can be intensely analysed and observed – observations play an important part in creating insight. But analysis and observation only form a part of the whole. It’s a starting point and what you do next begins the process and helps us re-examine the why’s and wherefores of our current situation and, indeed, our life. Think what that could do for you.
How many times have you thought – “Oh, now I see” or “Ah, I get it now”.
As annoying and frustrating as it may seem, sometimes we just need a little more information, a slightly different perspective or a small piece of knowledge that was otherwise missing and causing confusion and misunderstandings. It is much easier to understand something once the observations have been made and the knowledge gained. However, these two components are not always enough to give the insight required. What else is needed? Creativity. An ability to think more deeply and persistence. Being able to effectively structure a platform from which to spring forward requires clear communication, ideas set as concepts, a fundamental understanding of the challenge and enthusiasm to motivate to action.
An Insight meeting with me will begin this process whilst clearly defining key points and effectively targeting where to shift perspective and add lasting change.
Jigsaws
Knowing the picture on the box makes completing the puzzle seem infinitely more achievable. Just imagine attempting to put all those little, tiny pieces together without the knowledge of the completed picture? Madness.
And yet we constantly pursue what we want without much conscious thought as to what it will be like when we get it. What will life look like, feel like, be like when I have achieved what I set out to do?
More importantly, how will we know when we get there?
We waste countless hours searching, striving, working so hard to attain the ‘next thing’ and what does it actually achieve? Momentary pleasure before we tire, get bored and need the next thing.
Insight teaches us to envision what it is we want. The importance of a clear picture of the end result (just like the jigsaw) and this is what whets our appetite, keeps us motivated and engaged and will convey to our brains what it will be like, feel like. The key to insight is not to define the solution but clearly convey the end result.
Mind your language!
Do you know how many negative things we say to ourselves on a regular basis? Lots. And lots.
The negative self-talk takes four forms: filtering, catastrophising, personalising and polarising. There are many examples of this in our day to day thoughts and language patterns.
The most potentially damaging language is the negative way we speak to ourselves internally. It is almost impossible to set your sights, plan your moves and get what you want when you have a constant negative inner thought process sabotaging you at every turn leaving you feeling drained, out of control and unable to enjoy your achievements even if you manage it!
Wouldn’t it be nice to be able to connect with yourself on a deep emotional level and elicit understanding, review existing ideals and challenge the current perspective then create results by inspiring action and encouraging motivation to change.

So, what’s this Insight meeting all about? Good question.
As a therapist I have always offered my clients an informal chat to establish what the problem is and to formulate a treatment plan that will effectively combat their perception of the problem so tailoring the service uniquely to their requirements.
I have come to realise that some of my clients would benefit from a much more targeted and time effective approach that delivers results from the start and continues to build over the course of six, one-hour weekly sessions. This develops and maintains momentum whilst giving ample reflection and understanding review periods.
We owe ourselves a huge debt of gratitude and constantly let yourselves down on this front by not being clear with our boundaries and setting the bar for our own respect for us.
Achieving balance, creating space for creativity and establishing a new pattern that better reflects the person you are today is key to the success of the future you.
